Human Nutrition
Unit, AIIMS was established as an independent unit in
1973 in All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi
to promote teaching service and research in the field
of Clinical and Community Nutrition at the national level.
The Unit has three full time faculty members
and has a PhD programme in which the students are registered
for pursuing their research in the field of Clinical
and Community Nutrition. The Unit has a fully developed
laboratory which is headed by a Senior Biochemist and
necessary supportive staff. |

| The Unit has been undertaking
an active leadership role in the field of Community Nutrition
by working in the field of Micronutrients Deficiency Disorders
and National Nutrition Programmes. The ICDS scheme one of the
largest Nutrition Programme in the world was conceptualized
at this Unit and subsequently the faculty members continue to
provide guidance and support to the Department of Women and
Child Development, Government of India in implementation, monitoring,
training and research activities of this programme. |

| During last 35 years more than 50 operational
research projects in the field of Community Nutrition, particularly,
Micronutrient Disorders and National Nutrition Programmes have
been undertaken by the faculty members. A team of competent
research scientists exists for undertaking the research studies.
During last 10 years, the Unit has been actively pursuing research
in the field of Iron Deficiency Anaemia, Iodine Deficiency Disorders,
Vitamin A Deficiency, Zinc Deficiency and ICDS Scheme and have
contributed more than 180 research publications in National
and International Journals. |

| Human Nutrition Unit is working closely with
the different Ministries of Government of India namely Health
and Family Welfare, Industries, Food Processing and Human Resources
Development etc. The academic activities are undertaken to facilitate
implementation of their programs search studies have been implemented
on the identified priority projects to strengthen their program
activities |
